Stay safe and stay warm message as cold weather warning issued

Published:
01 Feb 2021

The warning was issued by the Met Office today and runs from Monday 1 February, through to Wednesday 3 February.

The cold front comes as many are staying at home during lockdown, presenting a further risk that vulnerable people could become cut off or isolated. As such, extra vigilance and community spirit is called for at this difficult time.

Sutton Council has published advice on how to cope with extreme weather.

It covers important subjects such as keeping yourself and your house warm, taking care when out and about, and looking out for other people.

Cllr Ruth Dombey, Leader of Sutton Council, said: “Cold weather is challenging for many people and this year it has been made even more difficult with the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Just because you may be isolating at home, traveling to a testing centre, or trying your best to live a normal life, it does not mean you are alone.

“Sutton Council staff are out making our roads safe and are working hard to ensure help is always available.

“Remember, the most important thing is the safety of yourself, your family and your neighbours, so please look after each other. If you have any concerns at all then please contact us at any time on 020 8770 5000.”

The Borough is prepared for cold outbreaks and our officers track weather reports and road temperatures three times a day to pick up any changes, ensuring we are ready to go out as a priority to begin gritting operations, should the need arise.

Sutton Council’s fleet of gritters help ensure major routes remain serviceable, including the COVID-19 testing centres. If the weather creates conditions for black ice to develop, paths and areas around schools are also cleared.

Further strengthening our response, Sutton has about 500 grit bins, where residents and businesses can collect grit to use themselves.

If you are concerned for yourself, a friend or neighbour, and cannot manage because of the weather conditions, contact the Council on 020 8770 5000, option 6, Emergency care services can be arranged if needed. Our ‘How to ask for help’ site has further information on assistance available during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a medical emergency an ambulance should be called using 999. For more information on being prepared for cold weather please visit our Winter Information Centre.
