Become a Dementia Friend for World Alzheimer's Day: 21 September

Globally, dementia is one of the biggest challenges we face, with nearly 50 million people living with dementia worldwide. Every three seconds someone in the world develops dementia.

This year, the theme for World Alzheimer's Month is 'Let's talk about dementia'. The Alzheimer's Society is encouraging people to learn more about dementia. They have factsheets and booklets about dementia available to read online, download or order to your door.

In Sutton the Admiral Nurses team, specialist dementia nurses, work alongside people with dementia and their families, providing one-to-one support, guidance and practical solutions to help patients to live in their own homes for longer, retaining comfort and independence in their lives.

Sutton is one of only two local authorities in London to employ Admiral Nurses, funded jointly by the Council and the NHS Sutton Clinical Commissioning Group.

Councillor Annie Moral, Dementia Champion for Sutton and Deputy Mayor, said:

“With so many people affected by seclusion and isolation during the COVID pandemic, it is more important than ever to talk about dementia. Whether that’s taking time to talk with a loved one who has dementia, or if you are a carer and want to talk to someone else about your own wellbeing.

“Since September 2020, our Admiral Nurses team has worked with over 350 families in Sutton, providing life-changing support for families affected by all forms of dementia – including Alzheimer’s disease. If you need support, the Admiral Nurses team can be there for you. Or why not sign up to become a Dementia Friend, and see what a difference just being there to talk can make to someone’s life.”

Bahman, a Sutton resident, contacted Dementia UK and was put in touch with the Admiral Nurse service:

“Without our Admiral Nurse, life would have been far more difficult physically and financially. I only have praise for our Admiral Nurse. It’s an excellent service.”
