Football wins and climate events to join

This week I was delighted to see that the Sutton Common Rovers FC youth team played their first fixture at the club's new pitch at the David Weir Leisure Centre.

I’m sure many of you will know that following Sutton United’s successful promotion to the Football League, some of the teams that used their grounds had to find alternative arrangements. We have been working with Sutton Common Rovers FC youth and development teams to bring them to the David Weir Leisure Centre this year, and with the Club with a view to making this the home ground for all their teams in the future.

So, it was with pleasure that I heard that the youth team smashed a 5-0 win against Corinthians FC on Monday evening, so Sutton footie really is on the keepie uppie!

Away from the excitement of football, this weekend sees the start of COP26. The international climate summit opens in Glasgow and to mark the opening weekend of the summit, I’ll be joining the fabulous Friends of Rose Hill Park and our very own trees team in the Rose Hill Park West Community Orchard to plant some new trees that will help to protect our environment for generations to come. 

We’re already seeing the effects of climate change in Sutton, so projects like this are an important and inspiring part of our community’s response. The good news is we can all make small changes that add up to a big difference. We’ll be exploring these in our COP26 events and activities over the next fortnight, including interactive panel talks with some big local names. I hope you can join us for some of these, and don’t miss the passionate Letters to the Earth written, drawn and painted by Sutton’s school students. It’s powerful stuff!
