Fire at Relko Gardens

The Rest Centre inside Civic Offices on St Nicholas Way has now closed. All residents at Relko Gardens have been contacted and offered alternative accommodation. Residents can continue to call us at 020 8770 5000 where support will be provided. This number is open 24-hours per day, 7 days a week.

The fire at Relko Gardens is now out and the London Fire Brigade are carrying out fire safety visits to the surrounding properties in the area. 

A statement from London Fire Brigade said: 

“Sadly, a person has died following a flat fire on Relko Gardens in Sutton. A three-roomed flat on the second floor of the building was destroyed by fire. One man was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews after suffering from smoke inhalation. Another person was found in a rear bedroom and was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The Brigade was called at 0721 and the fire was under control by 0844. Fire crews from Sutton, Mitcham, Croydon and Wimbledon fire stations attended the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.”

Cllr Ruth Dombey, Leader of Sutton Council, said:

“I'm saddened to hear that a person has died in the fire in Relko Gardens in Carshalton. My thoughts are with their family and friends at this difficult time. Thank you to the emergency services for their fast response. We are supporting residents who have been affected.”
