If your child has been identified as having SEND, their educational setting must, to the best of their ability, strive to put appropriate support in place; this means doing everything they can to meet children and young people's SEND. This is known as SEND Support (which has replaced School Action and School Action Plus).
The purpose of SEND Support is to help children and young people to achieve the outcomes or learning objectives set for them by their educational setting together with the child or young person and their parents/carers. It is essential that children and young people with SEND engage in activities within the educational setting alongside their peers who do not have SEND.
SEND Support has a clear cycle of assessment of progress, planning and putting in place the appropriate support and reviewing a child or young person's progress. This is known as the 'Assess, Plan, Do, Review'. Parents and carers should be fully involved with the discussions about their child or young person's needs and the support that is put in place.
The SEND Code of Practice 2015 sets out four main areas of SEND:
Communication and Interaction - for example, where children and young people have speech, language and communication difficulties which make it difficult for them to make sense of language or to understand how to communicate effectively and appropriately with others.
Cognition and Learning - for example, where children and young people learn at a slower pace than others their age, have difficulty in understanding parts of the curriculum, have difficulties with organisation and memory skills, or have a specific difficulty affecting one particular part of their learning performance such as in literacy and numeracy.
Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties - for example, where children and young people have difficulty in managing their relationships with other people, are withdrawn, or if they behave in ways that hinder their and other children's learning, or that have an impact on their health and wellbeing.
Sensory and/or Physical Needs - for example, children and young people with visual and/or hearing impairments, or a physical need that means they must have additional ongoing support and equipment.
