Council seeking comments on draft plan to improve Sutton’s air quality

Sutton Council is asking residents to share their views and ideas on its draft plan to improve air quality and reduce pollution across the borough.

Sutton’s proposed new air quality action plan outlines what the Council intends to do to help improve local air quality to protect the health of everyone who lives and works in the borough.

The action plan has six key themes:

• how local air quality is monitored 
• reducing emissions from development works and buildings
• raising awareness of air quality issues and how they impact on public health
• reducing emissions from service, freight and council vehicles
• local solutions to improving air quality
• cleaner transport

Sutton is one of the greenest boroughs in London. Last year, the Council planted 4,500 new trees and 10 school streets are helping to reduce traffic fumes at school drop off and collection times. 

The Council’s proposed action plan will help to ensure Sutton remains one of the greenest places to live in London by making it easier for residents to walk and cycle around the borough, raising awareness of air quality, by providing clear and accurate information on pollution levels to residents – and by engaging with community groups and businesses on the issue.

It also explains how the Council and its partners intend to monitor and review the actions set out in the strategy.

Councillor Barry Lewis, Chair of the Council’s Environment & Sustainable Transport Committee, said: “Cleaner air benefits everyone and Sutton is committed to improving air quality. The priorities set out in our draft action plan build upon the achievements from our previous plans. 

“We all have a responsibility to do what we can to reduce the emissions we are responsible for andI hope that residents, businesses and visitors will  have their say on our new Air Quality Action Plan.”
