Sutton STEAMs Ahead: Launch Event
'We Dance for Life' is an exploration and powerful creative interpretation of the pioneering research into cancer treatment taking place at the London Cancer Hub in Sutton. Choreography, when combined with different mediums can create incredible results. Members of the local community have been engaged as participants in the film, taking part in choreographed scenes depicting cell-like movement across a variety of iconic Sutton landmarks, including Mayfield Lavender fields, Manor and Beddington Parks, the Benhill Estate and Sutton High Street. Using aerial filming, these abstract dance sequences are intercut with scenes of scientists at The Institute of Cancer Research, London.
The film will premiere on World Cancer Day, Saturday 4 February 2023, 3pm-6pm
Venue: The Attic, St Nicholas Centre on Sutton High Street (3 St Nicholas Way, Sutton, SM1 1AY).

Kerry Boyne
Kerry Boyne burst onto TV screens on ITV’s ‘The Big Audition’, blowing the panel away with her energy and passion for entertainment. After presenting CITV’s flagship weekend breakfast show “Scrambled!”, she brings her talents as the live host of the Sutton STEAMs Ahead launch event.
Big Jest
Big Jest grew up in South London, focusing on his drive for rap in his early twenties. Since then he's amassed 250k+ Tiktok followers, released his ‘Facts Only’ mixtape and won series 4 of BBC show, The Rap Game UK, Big Jest will make an appearance at the event.
Mel Simpson
Mel Simpson is a Sutton-based Dance Artist, Choreographer and Education Specialist/Consultant, having worked internationally in opera, dance theatre, independent film and music video. As one of the choreographers for ‘We Dance For Life’, Mel brought a beautiful expertise to the film and will also be presenting a live choreographed performance.
Top Cat Productions
Top Cat Productions feature an intimate cast of actors using storytelling, puppetry, pantomime, music and more, to bring the wonder and magic of children's theatre and literature to local communities. They lead a scientific storytime for young families to enjoy. Perfect for under 5s.
Victor Films
Ian Sciacaluga & Victor Films directed and produced the short film, ‘We Dance for Life’, which celebrates the science pioneered at the London Cancer Hub, by weaving choreographed dance sequences into creative yet recognisable interpretations of scientific concepts. They will make an appearance at the event.
Shanelle Rudrigo
Shanelle Rudrigo
Shanelle Rudrigo is a young Sutton-based singer-songwriter who loves to play piano and guitar, having written her first song at age 12, "Don't Mess With Me", with empowering lyrics to tell the teens out there not to give up on their dreams. Shanelle will perform at the Sutton STEAMs Ahead launch event.
Sutton Community Dance
Sutton Community Dance know dance has an incredible power to change lives. Dancing can help us learn skills, gain confidence & improve your physical health. Dance is about regeneration and wellbeing - for our bodies, our town and our community. Attendees can enjoy their live performance during the Sutton STEAMs Ahead launch event.
Sutton Music Service
Sutton Music Service provides access to music in all its forms for every young person of the London Borough of Sutton. It is their aim to help young people make, be inspired by and to celebrate the music they love. Their good work will be on full display during the event with a live singing performance.
The Gary Mason Charity
The Gary Mason Charity continues the work of Gary Mason (former British Heavyweight Boxing Champion) providing hand drumming as a therapy and giving participants the opportunity to learn socially inclusive shared activities irrespective of age, race, creed and colour. They will lead a hand drumming session at the event.
UCL
A UCL team including UCL Young Bioscientist (UCL Division of Biosciences) and UCL GeoBus (UCL Earth Sciences Department) and the London Geodiversity Partnership will be showcasing the hidden worlds of rocks, habitats, and wildlife in Sutton, you’ll be able to dive deep into the microscopic world, discover rocks inside the St Nicholas Shopping Centre that are hundreds of millions of years old and learn how to make a bug hotel or bird feeder at home.
The Institute of Cancer Research
The Institute of Cancer Research, London, is one of the world’s most influential cancer research organisations, with an outstanding record of achievement dating back more than 100 years. Their scientists and students feature in ‘We Dance for Life’ and will speak at the Q&A session.
Sutton Heritage
The Sutton Heritage team will host a number of events, including family-friendly activities, printing projects, local history information, and the opportunity to participate in an exciting photography project.
