Check if your content should go on the website

Before writing or publishing new website content, ask yourself these questions:

Is there a statutory requirement to publish this content?

  • is there a London Borough of Sutton (LBS) statutory obligation to publish it?
  • is the content about an LBS service?

If yes to the above, you can ignore all other questions in this section.

Is the content original?

  • we only publish original content
  • copying third-party content can lead to copyright issues and also means that our web page will not get updated when the source changes
  • we can link to third-party content without copying it - find out more about writing descriptive links

Is there a user need for this content?

  • people come to our websites to get something done
  • they either want to find information, such as a summary of the latest council tax rules, or they want to perform a transaction like ordering a bin collection
  • we only publish content that helps users achieve these goals
  • before you publish content, you should be able to specify who you think will read the content, and which goals it will help them achieve

Are there enough potential online readers?

  • we only publish content on our websites that we believe has a large enough potential audience that is able and willing to access the content online
  • consider your readers' motivation, personal circumstances, and age
  • there may be better channels for the content, such as social media or a news item

Is this an FAQ?

  • we do not publish FAQs
  • instead, make sure that the existing content is clear enough for readers not to need an FAQ
  • FAQs duplicate content which competes in online searches with the pages the reader actually needs

Is this a PDF?

  • we publish documents as webpages whenever possible
  • PDFs make content harder to find, use and maintain
  • it requires considerable work to ensure that a PDF meets accessibility standards
  • only publish PDFs when it would be impractical to publish the information as a webpage
