Happy New Year

At this time of year, we often talk about making resolutions. Usually these are focused around giving something up or improving our fitness. While it is important to be mindful of our lifestyle and remain healthy, these resolutions are often based on depriving ourselves and many of us find that we cannot sustain our new resolutions for long.

So for 2022, why not look at things differently. Instead of depriving ourselves, let’s think about fulfillment - fulfilling ourselves, fulfilling others and fulfilling our communities.

  • Fulfilling ourselves: do you have a hobby or interest, or have you always wanted to develop a new skill? I know of many residents who have attended courses at Sutton College and then gone on to teach others or who have gone on to make their own products and sell them locally in the borough. If you have a desire to learn a new skill, then have a look at the many courses on offer at Sutton College, from arts and crafts to woodwork and calligraphy courses.

  • Fulfilling others: could you mentor a young person, ensure an older person receives a hot meal or want to help out at your local park? There are hundreds of opportunities available to make a difference and make life fulfilling for someone. If this is something you would like to explore then please contact Volunteer Centre Sutton.

  • Fulfilling our community: did you know that wherever you live in the borough, there is a local area committee for you. At each meeting, the police give feedback on what is happening locally, council officers present on different topics, and you as a local resident have the opportunity to ask questions, apply for funding to improve your area, or suggest ideas. It’s a great opportunity to be part of your community. See here for a list of meeting dates.

Whatever you choose to do, have a great year, enjoy new experiences, step outside of your comfort zone and look after yourself, others and your community.

Best Wishes,

Councillor Marian James
