The Government’s education inspection agency, Ofsted, has this week published its findings on the borough’s adult education facility, Sutton College.

The College has received a ‘requires improvement’ rating from Ofsted, which undertook its inspection in September 2022.

Inspectors commended the College on the high quality of tutors available, the effective protection measures it has in place for its learners’ health and wellbeing, and the support it offers speakers of other languages.

In order to improve at its next inspection, the College will focus on the consistency of the education services it provides. This includes more personalised programmes for learners and ensuring more regular feedback. .

On learning the outcome of the Ofsted inspection, Councillor Ruth Dombey, Leader of the Council, said:

“We are proud of the impact Sutton College has on the lives of so many in our borough and we are committed to its success.

“It is an institution that is very important to us, providing a range of courses from arts and crafts to fitness classes, that help to improve the health and wellbeing and provide skills training to so many people in our community. This Ofsted report recognises much of the College’s positive work.

“While we are disappointed with the inspection result, the College is determined to bring the level of learning up to where it needs to be.

“I am very pleased that since the inspection, the Council has been working with the College (Management and Governors) on kick starting their improvement programme and ensuring that they have the resources to address the issues raised. I recognise that College staff are strongly invested in the future of the College.

"Together, we are determined that when Ofsted next inspects Sutton College, they will be confident that it is offering our residents an excellent service in every respect."
