In determining the priority for repairing pot holes we consider the size and depth of the pothole and which road it's on. We aim to address the most serious of potholes within 24 hours. We, as the Highway Authority, have set the intervention levels at 45mm for road defects and 25mm for footpath defects.

When the Highway Inspector raises a Defect Order for the repair of a defect in excess of the above levels, he decides on the level of hazard posed to the public and issues one of the following Orders to our highways maintenance contractor:

  • Priority Works Order:- Repair, or making safe, to be done within 24 hours.
  • Urgent Works Order:-  Repair to be done within 8 working days.
  • Normal Works Order:- Repair to be done within 25 working days.

We have the responsibility for the maintenance of the roads and we prioritise resources to keep the public safe. However we are not able to repair all defects in the road surface unless classed as a pothole.
