Reduction of Council Tax on adapted properties
If a property has been adapted to meet the needs of a disabled person, a reduction in council tax may be applied for by completing this form:
Apply for disability banding reduction
To qualify for a reduction the property must also have at least one of these:
- a room, other than bathroom, kitchen or lavatory, which is specifically for and used by the disabled person (eg a room set aside for kidney dialysis)
- an extra bathroom or extra kitchen which is necessary to meet the needs of the disabled person
- enough floor space to use a wheelchair. The disabled person must need to use the wheelchair indoors
Please note: applications must be made by the council taxpayer.
The person qualifying for this does not have to be:
- the person liable for council tax
- registered disabled
- over 18 years old
Disability banding reduction only applies if the property has been adapted as a result of a person's disability.
If an adapted property qualifies, the discount is equivalent to lowering the council tax by one band (eg if the property is Band D it will be charged as if it was Band C).
If the property is Band A (the lowest council tax band), it will be charged at a rate equivalent to 5/9ths that of a Band D property.
