RIBA London has revealed its shortlist for the 2022 Regional Awards. We are pleased to announce that the Harris Academy Sutton, a brand new Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) specialist secondary school, part of the London Cancer Hub (LCH) campus, has been selected.

The RIBA Regional Awards celebrate great architecture across the UK and this year the panel focused on the environmental and social impacts of entries.

The school is located within Europe’s leading oncology district at The London Cancer Hub. It is part of the vision to expand the London Cancer Hub further to accelerate cancer research, treatment and care, and create around 7,000 high quality jobs in life science in the Borough. Harris Academy Sutton plays an important role to inspire and educate a new generation of health and science professionals, to support future success at the London Cancer Hub.

The London Borough of Sutton commissioned the design and construction of the school, which has become the UK’s first Passivhaus secondary school and the largest Passivhaus school in the UK. Passivhaus is an international standard for designing and constructing buildings that deliver super-high energy efficiency and impressive comfort. Designed by award winning Architype Architects and built by contractor Willmott Dixon, the facility offers a special focus on science disciplines with exceptionally low energy needs and light and inspiring internal spaces.

The school hosts 1,275 pupils and 95 staff across an efficiently designed layout. The Harris Academy is within easy reach of experts in research, healthcare, life science and new technologies next door, and is working with Sutton Council to develop education opportunities and career pathways into health and life sciences opportunities right on their doorstep.
