Resurfacing of Stafford Road between the junction of Redford Avenue and the junction with Sandy Lane South
The Council is planning to resurface a section of Stafford Road on the evening of the 9th and 10th March 2026. The section that the Council is planning to do is between the junction of Redford Avenue and the junction with Sandy Lane South (but not including the junction at Sandy Lane South). This follows on from the works that the Council did during Summer 2025, where they resurfaced the junction of Stafford Road with Mollison Drive/Plough Lane and both approaches to the junction on Stafford Road.
This section was flagged by the Council’s Reactive Maintenance teams as being a constant source of defects such as potholes and in need of full resurfacing. This is due to those defects and the constant source of wear that the road is exposed to, due to the heavy amount of traffic it receives due to being one of the main routes into the borough and Wallington Town Centre.
Unfortunately due to the heavy amount of traffic and the importance of the road, it is not possible to close the road during the day, so for practical and safety reasons, these works are having to be carried out as nightworks.
The shift is planned between 20:00 and 05:00 on both evenings, when the road will be fully closed during the course of the works (to allow the resurfacing to take place). This is not a decision that we take lightly but these works could not be programmed to be done during the day and the specifically noisy works will be done at the beginning of each shift to try and minimise disruption. The aim with the earlier in the evening start, is to try and get the work finished early on both evenings again to try and minimise disruption to residents.
With this road closure, buses and traffic will be diverted during the course of the works with the wider diversion being on the A23 Purley Way, A2022 Foxley Lane and to the A237 Woodcote Road, and Sandy Lane South being available to local traffic to the south, as well as Plough Lane and the A232 Croydon Road to the north.
The area marked red on the above plan will be completely closed to vehicle traffic during the works.
Closer to the works, letters will be sent out to any residents and businesses that may be directly affected by the works with more specific details on them.
Details for typical resurfacing works are listed on the Council Planned Maintenance pages.
