Wellbeing and Support This Christmas

It has been great to see businesses and volunteers come together across the borough to put up Christmas trees and switch on our Christmas lights. From Cheam to Banstead Road Yulefest, from Wallington to Sutton and not forgetting RoseHill and Beddington, a special thank you to all the elves and Santa’s special helpers who made these events so much fun for all.

This time of year highlights the generosity of our community. The Salvation Army Toy Appeal is a local initiative that works closely with Sutton’s Children's services and local schools to identify families in need. The gifts you donate, which are then carefully sorted and matched by age, ensure that parents and carers have presents to give to their children on Christmas morning.

While Christmas is joyful, it can also be a difficult time. I recently visited the incredible team at Sutton Mental Health Foundation, and I know first-hand the dedication they bring to our residents. If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available locally. You do not need to face things alone.

For urgent help in a mental health crisis you can call the mental health crisis line anytime: 0800 028 8000

Sutton Crisis Cafe is a free, safe, and non-judgemental drop-in space for those 18+ experiencing mild to moderate mental health crises. They are open every evening from 6.30pm-11pm, including bank holidays.

We know connection matters. Sutton Mental Health Foundation is also hosting online coffee mornings, including a session on Christmas Day morning. For details on these and other community support, please see here.

Your physical health is key to enjoying the winter months, and with a recent rise in flu cases reported nationally, protection is more vital than ever.

Getting your flu jab is quick and easy, I had my own flu jab a couple of weeks ago at a community pharmacy. I would urge all eligible residents to protect themselves and our NHS by getting vaccinated. If you are eligible, please contact your GP or local pharmacy as soon as possible.

As we enjoy the festivities, please remember to prioritise your wellbeing, both mental and physical.
