New Build Council Housing

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Frequently Asked Questions

How are the new Council houses being funded?

These developments are being funded through Housing Revenue Account borrowing and Greater London Authority grant or ‘Right to Buy’ receipts. 'Right to Buy' receipts are where the government has allowed local authorities to use a proportion of the monies received from the sale of Council housing to help fund the construction of new council housing stock, subject to specific restrictions.

Why has Sutton Council only recently started to build new Council houses?

Since 2012, Central Government has given councils more flexibility to finance build programmes through local authority Housing Revenue Accounts as well as a proportion of ‘Right to Buy’ receipts.

Why have these sites been chosen?

There is a real need for additional social housing in the borough so Sutton Council has been looking at a range of sites across the borough to develop. Redeveloping garage sites, as we are in this current phase, is one of the routes to deliver this housing we are pursuing.

How do I apply to rent any of these council houses or flats?

Within the borough, Council housing is allocated through Sutton HomeChoice. Our first three schemes have been allocated and our next new properties are due to be delivered in 2022. Shortly before completion, these rental properties will be advertised on the website and households registered on the council waiting list can apply. Properties are then allocated to the households categorised as high priority. For more information on applying and bidding for social housing please visit  Sutton home choice
