Sustainable Travel

School travel

Under the education and inspections Act 2006, there is a general duty on local authorities to promote use of sustainable travel and transport by taking actions such as proving free training to pupils and safe cycle routes/walkways to schools.

Help reduce the congestion on the roads during term times to make journeys quicker and less stressful for all and reduce C02 emissions.

If you would like to know more, or have any questions about school travel, please email smarter.travel@sutton.gov.uk

Travelling to school can be made active by walking or cycling the whole journey or combing walking with public transport.

Cycling to school

There are over 1000 cycle parking stands in school premises in the Sutton borough. Every school is given the opportunity to take part in free cycle training for their year 5 and 6 classes.

We have recently trialed the delivery of enhanced cycle training to secondary schools.‚ÄčAll schools in Sutton are eligible for free cycle skills training. Scooter training is offered to all primary school pupils. To book, please visit Cycle skills sessions.

Also find out about your child’s school travel plan to see what they offer for example Sutton High offers minibus travel for students and Devonshire primary offers our WOW scheme, encouraging walking once a week.

Walking to school

This has been made more favourable via traffic calming measures, 20 mph zones around schools, lollipop ladies, zebra crossings, improved signage and lighting etc.

For more information, please visit our walking page.

Did you know, if your child is 16 - 18 years old and attending further education they are eligible to completely free travel once they have paid a registration fee and receive a zip oyster card.

Driving to school

Why not car share to school, group up with other families living near you and share out the weekly school runs.
