Private sector housing

Empty properties

An empty home is a wasted resource both for the owner who could otherwise make financial gains by letting or selling the property, and for those who are in need of housing. In addition, empty homes can have strong negative impacts on residents living in the neighbouring vicinity and the wider community. For example they can attract vermin, graffiti and litter, becoming a target for vandalism, squatting, break-ins and arson.  The council have a range of powers and grants to assist the owners of empty properties to bring them back into use.
