Following a decision by the joint Kingston and Sutton Member Panel, Steve O’Connor has been appointed as Assistant Director for Digital and IT across Kingston and Sutton’s shared service.

With over 20 years’ experience in Digital and IT in the private and public sector, Steve joins the councils from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, where he is Group Chief Technology Officer.

In his current role, Steve has led the transformation of the department’s IT, bringing in modern tools and ways of working, as well as placing users at the heart of service design and delivery.

Prior to this, Steve was the Chief Technology Officer in the shared Digital Service at the Houses of Parliament, where he developed their cloud-first strategy and led the migration to the new platform, along with establishing new digital and open data approaches.

On being appointed, Steve said:

“I am excited by the ambitious plans for both boroughs and the central role that digital technology can have in achieving them. I’m looking forward to meeting the team and getting fully involved in the digital transformation work across both councils and leading a strong IT service, not only for Kingston and Sutton but also Achieving for Children."

On the appointment, Stephen Evans, Director, Communities at Kingston Council said:

“I’m delighted that Councillors from both councils have appointed Steve to the role. He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge, which will continue to drive our digital ambitions across both boroughs. We look forward to welcoming Steve to the council in January.”

Richard Simpson, Strategic Director of Resources at Sutton Council said:

“Steve’s appointment is excellent news for both councils and will enable us to continue delivering improvements and innovations in our digital service. We look forward to welcoming him.”
