Sutton Council secures ultra-fast broadband access for thousands of residents

The council has granted broadband provider Community Fibre to bring full-fibre broadband cabling to council-owned homes across the borough, which are managed by Sutton Housing Partnership (SHP).

Once works are complete, thousands of Sutton residents will be able to access a full-fibre connection offering much faster average speeds than those currently available.

The new, ultra-fast broadband means that households will be able to download films, music and browse on multiple devices at the same time without any compromise in performance. Equally, those who work or study from home could benefit from increased internet speeds and better accessibility.

Work to install the fibre cabling is expected to start in early 2020 and will take 18-24 months to complete. Residents can sign up to access faster internet speeds, which will be offered at varied price packages, dependent on the provider.

Also under the premise of the new agreement, Community Fibre will also deliver free wi-fi in communal areas of independent living schemes and council-owned community buildings.

Councillor Sunita Gordon, Sutton’s lead member for resources, said:

“I am delighted that more of our council housing households will be able to access high quality broadband as a result of this agreement with providers. Our ambitious digital strategy is continuing to improve the lives of residents by providing digital inclusion through projects like this.

“The positive impact is far-reaching - as barriers to education and leisure activities are often removed by access to services online.”

Steve Tucker, Managing Director, Sutton Housing Partnership, said:

“This is great news for our residents and we are pleased to be working with the Council to deliver quality internet connections to homes which have been disadvantaged for too long.

“Internet connectivity plays a key role in making sure people have access to services, local opportunities and for tackling social isolation. The improved coverage and the flexibility of choice to receive additional upgrades will be a huge boost to all residents in Sutton.

“SHP will continue to work with Sutton Council to support this high-priority project.”
