Sutton wins Mayor’s Cultural Impact Award

The Mayor of London has today announced that Sutton will receive one of his prestigious Cultural Impact Awards in 2023. The £200,000 funding will be used to stage six events, right across the borough, including a drone-filmed artistic event involving hundreds of Sutton residents, and an awe-inspiring light and laser show.

The funding was awarded as part of the Mayor’s cultural programme, and Sutton’s entry drew on the incredible scientific discovery happening at the London Cancer Hub in the south of the borough. The interlinking and cross-fertilisation of ideas between science and art will be the starting point for the light and laser show’s development.

Precision technology will be used to create a visual masterpiece, bringing the borough alight with a dramatic display, curated by professional light performance artists. Five other big events will be staged across the borough, involving people from all Sutton's communities.

Cllr Ruth Dombey, Leader of Sutton Council, said:

“This funding will enable us to put on a show to remember! While we have time to develop the show fully, we know that it will draw on the incredible work that scientists, artists and our local community are doing locally - it will be an event created with the people of Sutton and for the people of Sutton. I look forward with great excitement to seeing the plans progress.

“Thank you to everyone that has been working with us on our bid, and to nurture and strengthen Sutton’s arts and culture scene.”
