Who are your #LocalRepairHeroes?

Repairing rather than throwing an item away usually saves money and is almost always better for the environment. For example, it takes 2,700 litres of water to make one cotton t-shirt, but just a few minutes to fix a hem or remove a stain. 

As part of our Environment Strategy, we’re supporting the creation of a circular economy in Sutton - this means everything is reused, repaired, or re-manufactured into a new product or recycled. 

To make it easier for people in Sutton to find out where to repair things, we’re creating a repair directory. Here’s what a few of Sutton’s repair businesses who will feature in the directory love about what they do:

Harry Singh, of Worcester Park's Mobivape said: "I love my job because everyday I bring dead phones alive which puts a smile on my customer's faces, and that smile always makes my day."

Clarkes Jewellers has been part of the Sutton independent retail community since 1996. Owner Louise Claydon said: "We have a jewellery repair workshop in store and can undertake the smallest chain rejoins right up to the renovation of a treasured family heirloom.

"We love our customers' reactions when they collect their lovely shiny items of jewellery."

One area in particular which has seen a huge boom in numbers since the pandemic struck has been cycling, as people seek ways to travel while remaining socially distanced.

While this has seen a surge in sales leading to supplies of new bikes running out across the country, others have turned to their sheds to brush up old rides and get them roadworthy.

Duncan Inglis of Wallington Cycles

The Village Bike Shop in Carshalton and Wallington Cycles are two family-run businesses in the borough that offer everything from simple bicycle servicing, such as puncture repairs, to full custom rebuilds.

Duncan Inglis who has been running Wallington Cycles since his parents began retiring a few years ago, said: "It’s important to us that Sutton’s cyclists have a safe and enjoyable ride, whether they are commuting to work or school, cruising around town, doing stunts, shredding trails, or racing around the Surrey hills."
