Meals on Wheels: “To know that you are doing something that really benefits residents is great.”

Meals on Wheels provides our most vulnerable residents with a hot meal and pudding up to 7 days a week. Since the first lockdown, our team of staff and volunteers have provided more than 60,000 meals.

“The pandemic caused an increased need, where residents’ families and friends couldn’t get around to support them,” says Sarah Scott, Deputy Manager of Meals on Wheels.

“It’s such a fantastic job to do. To know that you are doing something that really benefits residents is great.”

The service is provided in partnership with Sutton Old People’s Welfare Committee and the meals are delivered by their volunteers.

“I live in Sutton and like to support the community,” says volunteer Kevin Sullivan, who also delivered packages for the Food Hub. “Meals on Wheels is very rewarding.”

Meals are delivered by 10 drivers and 10 escorts. They are kept in bubbles as much as possible, and we have worked closely with Public Health to ensure that all necessary precautions are taken.

For some, the pandemic inspired them to volunteer.

“When lockdown happened, I felt the time was right to help and give something back to the community,” says Annette Tallon.

“If I can make them smile or laugh, it will make a difference to their day and I've done a good job.”

Becci Gill started volunteering when she was furloughed. “I previously had cancer and needed people to look after me at that time,” says Becci. “I took the opportunity to do the same for other vulnerable people that need care.”

As well as providing food and a friendly face, the team play an important role in checking that clients are safe and well. Concerns are reported back immediately so that action can be taken.

This is just one of hundreds of services we provide in Sutton. But we are facing a big challenge.

More than 70% of our budget goes towards caring for Sutton’s vulnerable adults and children. Following COVID-19, more people are needing our help, while the cost of services is increasing.

Find out how we’re going to protect those needing our care and support Sutton’s recovery over the next 12 months.
