“Sutton’s heritage has given us something to focus on during lockdown”

Sutton South Hello is a community group for the over 50s. Our Heritage Team have been working with Sutton South Hello for a number of years, and the work of their Arts and Crafts sessions has been displayed at Honeywood Museum, Whitehall Historic House and beyond.

“Honeywood and Whitehall have featured greatly in my life over the years. I believe heritage is so important and feel we’re lucky to live in such a beautiful place with lots on offer.

I can walk along the river from my house in Beddington, down into Carshalton, and I sometimes feel overwhelmed by its beauty; it has been so well kept. The work that goes on locally cleaning during lockdown has amazed me. 

Awareness of local history and the significance of the area is so important. Sutton’s heritage has inspired so many people and given us something to focus on, which has been invaluable during lockdown. 

Sutton South Hello members have been invited to put on exhibitions at Honeywood. People are so proud to be involved and to invite family and friends to see their work presented locally. 

While our regular meetings are on hold due to the pandemic, our newsletter has become more important. One of our group members is writing memories of old Sutton for inclusion, and it has bought about a lot of discussion.”

Our Heritage team works with many local charities and community groups to host joint activities, produce exhibitions and bring to life previously unheard stories. 

This is just one of hundreds of services we provide in Sutton. But we are facing a big challenge. 

More than 70% of our budget goes towards caring for Sutton’s vulnerable adults and children. Following COVID-19, more people are needing our help, while the cost of services is increasing.
