Ahead of Volunteers’ Week 2021, Deputy Manager Sarah and volunteers Annette, Becci and Kevin talk about supporting our most vulnerable residents.
Our Meals on Wheels volunteers and staff have delivered more than 70,000 meals since the first lockdown.
As well as providing food and a friendly face, the Meals on Wheels team plays an important role in checking that clients are safe and well. Concerns are reported back immediately so that action can be taken.
“The pandemic caused an increased need, where residents’ families and friends couldn’t get around to support them,” says Sarah Scott.
Since the pandemic began, more than 3,000 people registered to volunteer in Sutton, including Annette Tallon.
“When lockdown happened, I felt the time was right to help and give something back to the community,” says Annette.
“If I can make them smile or laugh, it will make a difference to their day and I’ve done a good job.”
For others, a change in circumstances inspired them to get involved.
“I was driving a minibus for disabled people and had to stop work due to COVID,” says Kevin Sullivan. “I’d seen the Meals on Wheels vans out and about where I live and gave them a call. I live in Sutton and like to support the community.”
Becci Gill also started volunteering when she was furloughed. “I previously had cancer and needed people to look after me at that time,” says Becci. “I took the opportunity to do the same for other vulnerable people that need care.
For Becci and many other volunteers, what started as a response to the first lockdown has become an important part of their lives. Becci has returned to work part-time and continues to volunteer.
Our Meals on Wheels service is provided in partnership with Sutton Old People’s Welfare Committee. If you would like to volunteer, please contact the Sutton Old People’s Welfare Committee on 020 8642 5496 or by email.
