Statement on Supporting Wildlife in Beddington Park

"Like other Sutton residents and park users, I was horrified by the acts of cruelty which have recently taken place in Beddington Park resulting in the death of two Canada geese and two baby swans.

"During the lockdowns of the past year local parks and green spaces - with the wealth of wildlife and biodiversity that they home - have been key to the mental and physical wellbeing of our residents and visitors. The Council is proud of Sutton’s parks and works closely with our friends groups and park visitors to ensure that they are safe, enjoyable places to spend time. Following the wildlife attacks, we are working with colleagues in the Police Wildlife Crime Unit, London Wildlife Protection and the Friends of Beddington Park Group to identify any information that would help the police to trace the culprits.

"In addition to the Safer Parks Team, we also have the Parks Enforcement teams out and about this week, keeping an eye on what is happening and talking to people about using parks safely and responsibly.

"I encourage residents who have any information that could assist the investigation, to contact the police on 0207 230 8898 quoting reference 4005167/21.”
