The purchase is being made as part of the Council’s ambitious plans to regenerate the town centre and ensure that the future high street offers the local community an attractive destination with a range of businesses and organisations located there.

Cllr Ruth Dombey, Leader of Sutton Council, said:

“This purchase offers us an opportunity to ensure the future vitality of our High Street. As the long leaseholder, the Council will have much greater control and influence over a key town centre asset.

“The way people are interacting with their local areas has changed as a result of the pandemic and the Council is responding to these changing consumer and employment habits by delivering a vibrant high street. We will work with our local residents, retail, leisure and hospitality businesses and voluntary sector to ensure that we are safeguarding the centre of Sutton for future generations.”

The property acquisition is subject to a vote at the Council’s Strategy and Resources Committee on 14 June 2021. The acquisition is subject to a full legal and technical due diligence process which is still in progress.
