Commenting on the Government’s announcement that the United Kingdom will resettle up to 20,000 Afghan refugees in the long-term, Councillor Manuel Abellan, Deputy Leader of Sutton Council, said:

“Sutton is proud to have an Afghan community already established in the borough. Our hearts go out to them and all those living through such turbulent times in Afghanistan.

“Our borough stands with them and we look forward to welcoming to Sutton other Afghans seeking safety from the new Taliban regime.

“The Council is now working to understand the details of the UK Government’s resettlement scheme and play our part in it. We are ready to support Afghans in such desperate need in whatever way we can as a borough.”
