Sutton stands with refugees from Afghanistan

Seeing the utter desperation of men, women and children fleeing their homes to try and get to safety is heartbreaking. It is a reminder to us all how lucky we are to live in a country where we are safe from this kind of terrible persecution.

Following the news of the government’s plans to resettle up to 20,000 Afghan refugees, I gave a statement to say that Sutton Council will welcome Afghan refugees. To back up our pledge, the Leader of Sutton Council, Councillor Ruth Dombey, wrote a letter to our Government making it clear that we as a borough want to be involved in the Afghan Resettlement Scheme.

Our borough is already home to an established Afghan community and I hope those that get to call Sutton home in the near future will feel supported by us all. For those that have family and friends in Afghanistan, I can only imagine how distressing this time must be.

I am lucky to live in such a compassionate and caring community. I know that it’s easy to feel helpless in the face of distressing news from far away and many of you may want to help the people of Afghanistan. If you do, then please take a look at the details we have on our website.
