“What, not even water?” - Laila

The most sacred month for muslims, Ramadan, began this month.
Laila works for Sutton Council and shares her reflections on Ramadan.
As an observer, I’ll be fasting along with muslims around the world from dawn till dusk.
It’s a time for my spiritual, religious and personal reflection and growth, self-discipline, devotion, and ultimately bettering myself. It’s a special time where we help those in need, give more to charity, be better and spread kindness.
The daily fasts start with a meal before sunrise called ‘Suhoor’ and end at sunset where we come together to open the fast with a special evening meal called ‘Iftaar’. Although the meals can be culture specific, one thing we love to do is share and eat with friends, family, neighbours and our community.
While there are many things that Ramadan teaches me including giving more and consuming less, patience over instant gratification, the real challenge is ensuring that my newly learned positive habits continue throughout the year.
The month will end with a joyous celebration of Eid-ul-fitr where we spend time with our loved ones, exchange gifts and of course …indulge in a well deserved feast!
