A new vision for Sutton Town Centre

Today the Council has announced our ambitious plans for the St Nicholas Centre in Sutton Town Centre.

Over the last few years there has been a change across the country in the way we use our high streets and Sutton is no different. As more and more people move to online shopping we need to adapt what our High Streets have to offer.

In recent months we have been speaking to residents, businesses and visitors in Sutton about what they would like the future of the town centre to look like. This followed on from last year’s announcement that the Council had bought the shopping centre.

I am pleased that over 2,000 of you engaged with our most recent survey, as well as attending webinars and meetings, or visiting the pop-up stalls on the high street. Some of the views you shared were about wanting an increase in both independent and chain retail stores, greater access to public services, lots of greenery and more cultural and leisure facilities.

I believe our proposals respond to these views. They include:

  • High-quality retail, leisure and restaurant space for new and existing businesses;

  • Modern library, college and community facilities;

  • New affordable family homes for the community.

These plans will build on the work we are already doing to transform Sutton town centre into a more vibrant location and to be more reflective of the community and our needs. This can be seen through the new Throwley Yard cinema and community arts venue and the Oru Sutton coworking and wellbeing space for new start-up businesses. I’m proud that Sutton Council is leading this redevelopment, creating a modern town centre while also recognising its historic and cultural importance.

The proposals are being considered at the Council’s upcoming Strategy and Resources Committee on Monday 7 November.
