More than ten formal bids have been submitted to Sutton Council proposing a variety of uses to bring part or all of the Charles Cryer Theatre complex in Carshalton back into use.

The bids are currently being evaluated by officers. The evaluation will involve a stakeholder panel of citizens and young commissioners who will be helping to assess the bids. Panel members will be assessing how closely bids meet the brief to benefit the wider community and maintain a venue for community and cultural activity in the borough.

Cllr Steve Penneck, the council’s lead member for arts and culture, said: “We are very pleased with the level of interest shown in the Charles Cryer Theatre. Bidders will need to demonstrate that their plans are viable and sustainable in the long term and of benefit to the wider community.”

A shortlist will be decided by the end of August, with those shortlisted due to make presentations to the panel at the beginning of September.

A recommendation will be made to the council’s Strategy and Resources committee with a final decision to be announced on 29 October.
