Changes to COVID-19 guidance

From Thursday 27 January, England returned to Plan A Covid measures.

This means you’re no longer legally required to wear a face covering in indoor settings. But some businesses will continue to ask people to wear them, including Transport for London and some high street retailers.

Imran Choudhury, Director of Public Health at Sutton Borough Council said:

“Cases in Sutton continue to move in the right direction, but we know the virus spreads most easily when people come together indoors, so it’s wise to remain cautious.

“Many people will want to continue to wear masks and I’m asking everyone to be considerate of each other’s choices as we make the transition from Plan B to Plan A.

“We all have a role to play to keep Sutton safe. I encourage everyone to wear a face covering in crowded and enclosed spaces where you may come into contact with other people you do not normally meet, and to keep opening windows so that fresh air can circulate. And of course, it’s most important to get all your vaccinations, test regularly, and self-isolate following a positive result.”

Other Plan A measure include:

  • You will no longer need to work from home,

  • Staff and pupils in secondary schools and colleges are not required to wear a face covering in classrooms,

  • You’ll no longer need to show your NHS COVID Pass at venues and events by law, although venues can continue to ask for them on a voluntary basis.
