Council elects new Mayor of Sutton

Councillor Colin Stears has been elected as the new Mayor of Sutton following a vote at Annual Council last night, 22nd May 2023.

Councillor Stears was born in St Helier Hospital and has been a Councillor since 2006. He was the Lead Councillor for Adult Social Services for 12 years and has most recently chaired the Council's Scrutiny and Audit and Governance Committees, before becoming Deputy Mayor last year.

A qualified accountant, Councillor Stears has worked in the NHS for over 45 years and is the Managing Partner of one of the largest General Practices/Primary Care Networks in London. He is an active member of Cheam and Sutton Royal British Legion and at present is Branch Standard Bearer and Treasurer.

Councillor Stears is also a keen sports enthusiast, having refereed football at a senior level for many years, he also played cricket for Luton Town CC.

Councillor Louise Phelan was elected as Councillor Stears Deputy Mayor. Louise has lived and worked in the borough for over 25 years and was elected as Councillor for Sutton South in the most recent local elections in May 2022.

Upon his election as Mayor, Councillor Stears said:

“It is a huge honour to be elected as Mayor of the London Borough of Sutton. Last year I had the privilege of being the Deputy Mayor to Councillor Trish Fivey. In my year as Mayor I would like to continue the hard work of Councillor Fivey and I look forward to working alongside Councillor Louise Phelan as my Deputy Mayor.

“I am extremely proud to be a life-long resident of Sutton, and I am really looking forward to meeting as many residents and local community groups as possible to thank them and celebrate the fantastic contributions they make to our borough.”
