Food Vouchers during the school holidays 2022 - 2023

Sutton Council will be providing a food support package for families whose children go to Sutton schools and are eligible for Free School Meals (FSM) to ensure children don’t go hungry during the school holidays.

However, the government has provided local authorities with the Household Support Grant that Sutton Council will use to support families with access to food during school holidays by allocating food vouchers.

Sutton Council is working with Sutton schools and education settings to distribute food vouchers to families who have pupils eligible for Free School Meals or meet the Early Years eligibility criteria.

Vouchers provided will be as follows for each holiday period

  • Summer break £90 per child
  • October half-term £15 per child
  • Christmas break £30 per child
  • February half-term £15 per child

For the vast majority of eligible families, schools will issue vouchers through the following  school vouchers platform:  automatically using the information they already hold on eligible families (parents/carers do not need to apply).

Parents/carers of children that are registered for free school meals at their school do not need to apply, your school (whether in the London Borough of Sutton or in another Local Authority area) will distribute vouchers to eligible families directly, before each holiday period. This will apply to the vast majority of pupils eligible for the voucher.

We have asked schools to distribute vouchers to eligible pupils by the following dates for each holiday period:

  • Summer break 2022 by 22 July 2022
  • October half-term 2022 by 21 October 2022
  • Christmas break 2022 by 15 December 2022
  • February half-term 2023 by 10 February 2023

If your child attends a school and you have not received your voucher by then please contact your school.

Children not attending school

There will be some families who are eligible for a food voucher but whose children do not currently attend a school (i.e. pre-school children or your child is home educated), who will need to apply for a food voucher prior to each school holiday period.

To receive a food voucher before each of the school holiday periods for families applying for food vouchers, the application forms must be submitted between the following dates for each holiday period.

  • Summer break 2022, applications open on 8 July and close on 18 July 2022
  • October term half-term 2022, applications open on 30 September and close on 17 October 2022
  • Christmas break 2022, applications open on 28 November   and close on 12 December 2022
  • February half-term 2023, applications open on 23 January and close on 6 February 2023

Parents/carers will be asked to decide which supermarket they want their voucher to be used in. Food vouchers will be redeemable at Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Aldi, Morrisons, and Iceland.

Parents/carers will receive a link to the voucher by email from either their school or the council (depending on who is issuing the voucher).

Free School Meals

Ordinarily, the Free School Meals (FSM) entitlement is only available during term time, not during school holidays. However, the government has provided local authorities with the Household Support Grant that Sutton Council will use to support families with access to food during School holidays by allocating food vouchers.

Free School Meals (FSM) entitlement means that pupils are registered to receive free school meals during term time, free of charge.

All pupils in reception, Year 1 and Year 2 receive the free school meals at school without an application process as part of the existing universal free school meals offer. (UFSM). However, to receive a food voucher during the school holidays, your child must be registered for free school meals (FSM) at the School they attend. You can apply for FSM on the Council’s website.

Free School Meals for children in Year 2 is available for households, where parents / carers receive certain benefits, such as Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance, Employment Support, Child Tax Credits, Universal Credit and some other benefits. To find out if your child is eligible for Free School Meals, you can apply on the Council’s website. You will need to do this to be eligible for FSM to receive food vouchers for the school breaks.

Support for families over school holidays - food vouchers

Eligibility for food vouchers

Sutton Council will provide food vouchers if:

  • You have a child attending a school in Sutton and they are registered for Free School Meals (FSM)
  • You have a child attending an Early Years Setting in Sutton for their Free Childcare entitlement and (i) the child is aged 2 and taking up their free entitlement in a Sutton setting OR (ii) the child is aged 3 or 4 and is registered for the Early Years Pupil Premium (EYPP)
  • You are resident in the London Borough of Sutton, who would be eligible for free school meals under the current criteria but are currently electively home educating a child of statutory school age or are in Education other than at school

If you are unsure you can check with your school if you have registered for free school meals with them or not. If you haven’t registered but think you might be eligible you can ask them about how to apply, or alternatively visit the Sutton council website

Children aged 2-4 years old

If you are a parent/carer of a child aged 2 taking up the free childcare entitlement in a Sutton early years setting such as a day nursery, preschool or childminder, you are eligible for a food voucher during the holiday periods. You can apply using food voucher application form

Check if you are eligible for the free childcare entitlement for 2-year-olds

If you are a parent/carer of a child aged 3 or 4 that attends a Sutton early years setting and your child is registered for Early Years Pupil Premium (EYPP) can apply for a food voucher by completing the Food Voucher application form.

Parents can check whether their child is registered for EYPP with their childcare provider prior to applying for a food voucher.

Families that choose to home educate

Some families choose to home educate their children. Normally, this means that they cannot register for free school meals because the child is not in school. However, we want to make sure that families that meet the eligibility criteria for Free School Meals that have elected to home educate their children have access to this scheme and can apply using the Food Voucher application form

If you are unsure if you are eligible for the food vouchers or would like more information about your application for food vouchers please contact education.sendfeedback@sutton.gov.uk

If your child attends a school and you have not received your voucher by then please contact your school.

Families with children that do not meet the criteria above can find out about the additional support available for families over the period on the Sutton Council website , cost of living campaign or you can contact Sutton Food Bank
