HMO regulation is changing

Landlords need to be aware of new regulations as the definition of "houses in multiple occupation" (HMO's) is changing from the 1 October 2018.

A license will be required for all rented residential properties where 5 or more people in 2 or more households share an amenity such as a bathroom or kitchen

Landlords under the new definition must apply for an HMO licence by 1 October 2018 or face a £20,000 fine.

New regulations also set a minimum size requirements for bedrooms in HMOs to prevent overcrowding and landlords will also be required to adhere to council refuse schemes, to reduce problems with rubbish.

Environmental Health are currently reviewing properties in Sutton to see if they fall under the new licensing scheme, and urge landlords to contact them if they have any doubt or want assistance with the process.

As ever tenants in these properties can contact us also if they have any concerns as to this change in legislation.
