Sutton Council and Action Groups from Sutton’s Learning Disability Strategy have been delivering on the promises made at the Learning Disabilities Conference in March 2023.

Sutton Council held their first Learning Disabilities Conference in March 2023. Adults and young people with learning disabilities, families and carers talked about what life is really like for them in Sutton and discussed suggestions and ideas on how to make improvements.

During the event attendees made promises to help make Sutton a better place for people with learning disabilities, their families and carers and agreed to report back in six months to show progress.

A follow-up event took place in September 2023 with carers, professionals and people with lived experience to discuss the promises made and actions taken. Following this successful follow-up event the Council is pleased to report that good progress has been made on most of the promises made in March.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Ruth Dombey said; “It has been excellent to hear of the actions taken following the promises made at our Learning Disability Conference in March. We want everyone in Sutton to play an equally active part in our community, to make sure Sutton truly is an inclusive place for everyone. The conference in March was the first of its kind here in Sutton, it was great to get people together and talk about the realities of living with a learning disability in Sutton. I look forward to the next Learning Disabilities Conference.”
