Marking National Hate Crime Awareness Week

We know that Sutton is one of the safest boroughs in London and we are determined to keep it that way. Visiting businesses in Sutton High Street, along with police officers, voluntary organisations and Stop Hate UK, we heard that generally people feel safe in our borough but that instances of hate crime can have a huge impact.

There are different forms of hate crime and it tends to be underreported. But any crime against a person because of their disability, faith, gender, race or sexual orientation is a serious crime and it's important that we all work together to ensure that anyone who has been the victim of a hate crime knows where and how they can access support. We want to see all perpetrators brought to justice so that everyone feels safe.

That's why Sutton Council commissions Stop Hate UK's 24-hour free third party reporting line. It provides independent, confidential and accessible reporting and support for victims and witnesses.

Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 - this number allows you to give information to the police with guaranteed anonymity about crime and criminal activity. If a crime is underway then you can still ring 999.

Hate crime doesn't just harm its victim, it harms our whole community. Sutton Council is committed to tackling hate crime and raising awareness so that people feel confident to report it and help us keep our borough safe.
