Sutton Council has today delivered its ‘Sutton Says No’ petition on the proposed extension of the Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) to the Mayor of London.

Leader of Sutton Council, Councillor Ruth Dombey, handed in the petition - which has reached more than 10,500 signatures in just two months - and a letter to the Mayor at City Hall in East London.

The Leader made a film of her journey by train showing just how long and difficult it can be to use public transport from Sutton to get around the capital. One of the key demands in the petition is for the ULEZ expansion to be delayed until the borough sees major improvements to its public transport services.

The council petition calls on the Mayor of London to delay the ULEZ expansion until:

  • the cost of living crisis is over
  • the vehicle scrappage scheme is expanded
  • public transport is improved significantly in Sutton

Councillor Ruth Dombey, Leader of Sutton Council, said:
“Thank you to the over 10,500 people who have signed the Council’s petition on ULEZ.

“It is clear that huge numbers of Sutton residents, charities, businesses, visitors and suppliers still feel that their fears and concerns about the ULEZ expansion are being ignored. It is a mistake to go ahead with this scheme during a cost of living crisis when so many people are struggling locally.

“Londoners need more support than what is currently being proposed. They simply cannot afford a considerable additional expense at this time. This is especially true in Sutton where there are very few public transport alternatives and people have no choice but to use their vehicles for work and getting around.

“With just two months to go before the ULEZ expansion is scheduled to come into effect, Sutton’s petition calls on the Mayor of London to listen to these very real ongoing concerns and respond to the clearly expressed views of people living and working in Sutton.”
