Sutton’s Role in South London’s Ambitious Future

With a population of 1.2 million people and an economy of £38 billion the South London boroughs of Sutton, Richmond, Merton, Kingston and Croydon are key to the success of our capital city and indeed the whole country.

This week, alongside London's Deputy Mayor for Business, Howard Dawber, and the five boroughs which make up the South London Regional Partnership we unveiled the "BIG Ambition: South London Growth" statement.

The statement is a powerful declaration of a shared commitment from five South London boroughs. We're joining together to drive long-term, locally-led growth by focusing on really critical sectors like health and life sciences, technology, creative and digital industries, environmental innovation, and advanced manufacturing.

Sutton features prominently in the new statement with The Royal Marsden NHS Trust, Institute of Cancer Research, Epsom & St Helier NHS Trust, Subsea 7, Oru Sutton, BedZed, Sutton College, SDEN, Sutton United FC, Throwley Yard, Cryer Arts, London School of Innovation, Sound Lounge and LexisNexis all getting a special mention.

The Council’s major regeneration project at the London Cancer Hub in Belmont is also highlighted as one of Europe’s leading cancer research districts and a key driver in London’s future economic growth and innovation.

"BIG Ambition" builds on the Mayor of London's bigger growth plan, but it makes a really strong case for more funding and power to be given directly to us. Each of the boroughs know what is needed for our own communities - so we are in the best position to deliver this growth.

So as Leader of Sutton Council, I am determined to help build a future where the residents and businesses in Sutton will thrive and where Sutton really is a place where you can live well, work hard, and have fun.
