Sutton's support for Tram extension shows investment is needed in our transport infrastructure

A public consultation into the proposed ‘Sutton Link’ generated 5,980 responses between 31 October 2018 and 6 January 2019. Of those who supplied a postcode - 3,906 (65%) were from Sutton.

Respondents were presented with various transport options and routes on which they could express support. Over 80 per cent supported the extension of the London Trams network as opposed to 40 per cent who supported a Bus Rapid Transit option.

Cllr Jayne McCoy said: “Sutton residents clearly expressed an ambition to improve public transport and bring the London Tram to Sutton.

“We need new and modern means of transport to persuade people to travel into and around our borough in a sustainable way.

“The TfL consultation is important as it strengthens the case for significant transport infrastructure investment in our borough.

“We’re keen to continue working with TfL, the Mayor of London and the London Borough of Merton to realise the shared ambitions for bringing the Tram to Sutton to help ensure Sutton remains a great place to live, work and raise a family.”

TfL will review all consultation feedback before any final decisions are made on the next stages of the Sutton Link development later this year. The council will share news of the final decision as soon as possible.

TfL will also publish a ‘Responses to issues raised’ document at this time, listing and responding to all of the issues raised by respondents to the ‘Sutton Link’ consultation.
