Sutton Scene - Deputy Leader of the Council Column P2

It is now up to all of us to follow the rules, do what we can to keep Sutton safe and prevent London from moving into the highest level of restrictions. The Tier system will be reviewed every two weeks, with the first review on 16 December. Please remember to wash your hands, wear a face covering and keep your distance. Hopefully, we can soon begin to see light at the end of the tunnel in 2021.

With Christmas just around the corner, I am also pleased that local businesses are now able to open again. It’s been an incredibly difficult time for Sutton’s stores, cafes, pubs and restaurants. Businesses in the borough have shown real resilience by adapting the delivery methods and products they offer, as well as supporting community groups. Council staff have worked hard with local businesses over the last few months to support them in making venues as safe as possible.

Tomorrow is Small Business Saturday, an annual national event highlighting the success and importance of independent traders. If you are out shopping, please look first to Sutton’s high streets, district centres and town centres for all your gifts, goods and services. You can make a real difference if you ‘shop local’ on your high street, buy from independent businesses or search online for local businesses using the Small Business Finder tool.

Supporting our local businesses is more important than ever and they need our help. The Christmas lights are now switched on around the borough to help our town centres create that festive feeling for shoppers too.

Shopping locally is good for our businesses, good for local jobs and good for the environment with people or walking to their local shops. Sutton’s district centres are now ready for everyone to enjoy safely. Our small businesses look forward to seeing you!
