Sutton Scene - Leader of the Council Column 29/05/2020

Following the Government guidance that schools should open for more children from 1 June, the Council has been working with our schools to help put detailed plans in place. The focus is firmly on the safety of children, their families and school staff.

Primary schools will begin to welcome back children in nursery, reception, year 1 and year 6 when they are ready and it is safe to do so. A huge thank you to all school, nursery and early years staff responsible for providing these services.

As more people start to use public transport for work and essential journeys, please do think carefully about your travel times and try to avoid peak times if you can. Social distancing is still crucial if we want to maintain the infection rate on a downward trend and that means avoiding crowded situations as much as possible. Walking and cycling are great ways to enjoy this lovely weather.

Over the coming days, we'll be rolling out temporary measures to make some pavements and roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists around the borough. We'll be asking you for your views on these schemes and if you have any suggestions for other places around Sutton where we could do something similar in the coming months. Social distancing will be with us for some time so we're keen to find ways of ensuring that people can get about safely.

Have a great weekend.
