The Leader of Sutton Council Congratulates Sutton United

Huge congratulations to Sutton United F.C. for their outstanding 2020/21 season, which ended last weekend with them being promoted to play in the English Football League for the first time in the club’s 123-year history.

Along with the rest of the borough, I want to say thank you to the club for putting Sutton on the map and making the national news.

I was reminded of the evening of Tuesday 21 February 2017 when Arsenal F.C. came to Gander Green Lane to play Sutton in the fifth round of the FA Cup. There was a real buzz around the borough that evening: yellow and black scarves and flags flew proudly from windows and everyone in Sutton was talking about the match - including me!

Despite us not winning that night, the heroic performance of the team certainly brought the football lovers and the wider community together.

Getting promoted to League Two is such a fantastic achievement by everyone involved in the club, and it was especially great to hear that so many of their supporters were actually there in person to watch the match and witness this momentous event. I’m sure their presence gave the team an extra lift.

I am pleased that the club will now receive extra funding and that some of that will be used to re-invest in the stadium, such as replacing the artificial pitch and introducing extra seats and floodlights.  I look forward to this having a wider impact on the borough and local businesses.

We will also be welcoming teams such as Bolton Wanderers and Leyton Orient, along with their supporters, to Sutton. This will be a great boost to local shops, pubs/bars, cafes and restaurants which will help Sutton’s economy and local jobs as we recover from the pandemic.

Achievements such as Sutton United’s really help to lift our community spirit after these difficult times and I wish them all the best for the coming season.

Congratulations to everyone at Sutton United F.C. - the management, staff, players and of course the supporters - you have made Sutton very proud indeed!
