The small steps which are transforming local care

To mark Occupational Therapy Week 2025 (November 3rd to 7th), Sutton Council is shining a spotlight on a vital yet often overlooked profession that is quietly revolutionising how people in the Borough maintain their independence and avoid more serious health issues.

Occupational Therapists (OTs) offer practical solutions that empower people to lead fuller lives. From providing equipment and aids to offering support in how to access the community more independently or plan and cook a meal, OTs help people make small changes which have a big impact.

Based in the heart of local communities, teams like Sutton’s Enabling Independence Team are on the frontline every day. The small team uses Occupational Therapy approaches to support adults with learning disabilities or mental health needs, helping them to unlock their potential for independent and fulfilling lives.

One of the many residents who have benefited from the team's support is Rowan. 30-year old Rowan loves dancing and meeting up with friends. But his active social life meant that his mum Julie had less time for herself as she had to accompany Rowan to and from his activities.

The Enabling Independence Team worked with Rowan to increase his independence and supported him with travel training. This involved building Rowan’s confidence in walking to and from the bus stop, getting on the bus and knowing where to get off, without the support of his mum.

The support has been a great success. Rowan explains: "I travel on my own easily. I'm very independent."

Rowan’s growing independence is a great source of pride for mum Julie and it has led him to embrace other things in life. "He is a changed person. It's given him the freedom to think for himself, and he feels part of the wider community."
