Celebrating Sutton’s carers

This week I announced my intention to stand down from May as Leader of the Council after twelve eventful years. You can read my statement and reasons on the council website.

As I reflect on this, I’m reminded of one of the most important and vital roles of local government: supporting and caring for our vulnerable residents. It’s what brought me into politics and why I wanted to be a local councillor. It’s something I have always prioritised as Leader, especially when the Council’s financial situation means huge pressures and competing demands. The fact is more people than ever need our help. The Council has a key role to play but our incredible voluntary and community sector partners also do an amazing job.

Young Carers Action Day took place this week - a chance to shine a light on the extraordinary work that our young carers do every day in Sutton to care for their loved ones, ably and wonderfully supported by our friends at the Sutton Carers Centre. They are an important part of the care system - as much as any council social worker.

I had the pleasure of meeting some of our Young Carer Ambassadors recently at a Health and Wellbeing Board and was inspired by their enthusiasm and dedication to caring for their loved ones.

Next week is Social Care Week, where we celebrate the value and impact of care on our whole community in Sutton at our free exhibition, Our Sutton, Your Story, at the Central Library Gallery Space from 19 - 25 March. I’m looking forward to attending next week to see the artwork on display.

It’s a chance to thank those who care for others every day, whichever role they work in. To celebrate so many of Sutton’s unsung heroes who quietly go about their lives while making such a difference to others.

I hope you’ll join me in visiting our exhibition next week to see the artwork on display and celebrate Sutton’s carers. Find out more information about the exhibition on the Sutton Council website.

Leader of the Council,
Councillor Ruth Dombey
