If your application for British citizenship is approved by the Home Office, you’ll be sent a letter or email inviting you to a citizenship ceremony.

If you are over 18 years old you must attend a citizenship ceremony. You don't have to attend if you're under 18.

You can now book your ceremony online; you will need your Home Office reference number (starting with 02 or 03 or 9 or 1212- ) and your surname, if you have a double surname, please only use the last one.

If you are unable to book online please call us on 020 8770 6790 or complete the enquiry form.

Where the ceremony is held

Citizenship ceremonies are held at the Sutton Register Office (Russettings), 25 Worcester Road, Sutton, SM2 6PR.

In Sutton, citizenship ceremonies are normally held in two small groups every other Wednesday of the month and are free of charge.

If you are unable to attend a group ceremony we do offer a private ceremony for a fee of £130 per person (Monday - Friday) or £185 per person (Saturday). To arrange your ceremony please call us on 020 8770 6790 or complete the enquiry form below at the bottom of this page.

You will need to bring your Home Office invitation letter and photo ID to the ceremony.

Please wear what you consider appropriate for this type of ceremony. There is no dress code and it is entirely your choice how you dress.

What happens at the ceremony

During the ceremony:

  • the superintendent registrar will give a speech of welcome
  • you'll take a new citizenship oath and pledge - this is a legal requirement and is the moment at which citizenship is granted
  • you’ll receive a certificate, information pack and commemorative gift
  • the national anthem will be played

You'll collect your certificate of naturalisation at the end of the ceremony. You can then use this to support passport applications and to prove British citizenship.
