Council launches petition on ULEZ expansion

The Leader of the Council, Councillor Ruth Dombey, announced the petition at a special meeting of all councillors on Monday 24 April to discuss the impact of ULEZ on the borough’s residents, businesses, suppliers and visitors.

The Council has been calling on the Mayor of London to halt his plans since July 2022 and invited the Mayor to come to Sutton and see first hand the likely effects of his proposals. The Mayor has so far refused to visit Sutton and announced last November that the proposals would come into effect in August 2023. 

The petition calls on the Mayor of London to think again about the extension of the Ultra Low Emissions Zone to Sutton unless public transport in the borough is improved significantly; the vehicle scrappage scheme for drivers to convert their cars to ULEZ requirements is expanded; and the cost of living crisis is over.

Councillor Ruth Dombey, Leader of Sutton Council, said:

“I urge everyone impacted by the ULEZ scheme, whether residents, businesses, students, visitors and suppliers to sign our new petition for the Mayor of London to rethink his ULEZ expansion. 

“The Council agreed in July 2022 to ask the Mayor to put his scheme on hold unless public transport in the borough is improved significantly; the vehicle scrappage scheme for drivers to convert their cars to ULEZ requirements is expanded; and the cost of living crisis is over.

“Sadly, our calls have fallen on deaf ears and our residents, businesses and visitors have been ignored by the Mayor of London. Now we have just a few months left to show the Mayor the strength of feeling in Sutton before the ULEZ is imposed on our borough against our wishes. Please spread the word to everyone you know and ask them to sign our petition.”
