Creating a town centre fit for the future

This week the Council launched a survey and announced a series of events where we are giving you the opportunity to tell us what you think a great town centre would look like.

Having spoken with residents across the borough, I know how important our town centre is to everyone and this is why we would like you to be involved. Our vision is for Sutton to be a place with great shopping, a variety of culture, some fantastic choice of food, modern flexible working and good quality affordable housing.

Over the past couple of years, like many other high streets elsewhere, our town centre has been struggling. . We saw the unfortunate closure of some of our major retail outlets, due to factors such as the growth of online shopping and of course the pandemic.

As a result of this, the Council is working hard to make a number of positive changes to our town centre. I’m pleased to tell you that we are currently delivering some really exciting projects to make our vision a reality. Projects in Sutton High Street such as the Throwley Yard cultural hub and Oru Sutton co-working space which are both set to open next year.

But this is just the beginning!

You may remember that last year we bought the leasehold of the St Nicholas Centre so we could determine its future. This has given us a once-in-a-generation opportunity to revitalise the town centre, and this is where we want to hear from you!

You can have your say by taking part in the survey, coming along to one of the Council’s pop-up events in Sutton or by joining the webinar.

I really appreciate you taking the time to get involved so you can help shape the future of our town centre.
