Democracy and community through Local Committees

In Sutton I am proud that we have regular Local Committee meetings which allow everyone to have a say in issues that affect our community. These meetings bring together ward councillors and community representatives, with anyone living or working in the local area able to attend.

Local Committees provide an opportunity for the council to be more responsive to issues you have raised and help you influence local services in the borough. There are also opportunities to hear from organisations working to support us locally, including the police, health representatives, voluntary and community groups and council officers.

There are six Local Committee areas covering the whole of the borough. These are:

  • Beddington and Wallington

  • Carshalton and Clockhouse

  • North Cheam, Stonecot and Worcester Park

  • Hackbridge, St Helier, and the Wrythe

  • Sutton Local

  • Sutton South, Cheam and Belmont

Each local committee area is given council funding for projects that benefit the community. With these grants, local groups and organisations can run one-off events such as fun days and festivals, as well as training days and start-up costs for new projects. There is also a separate pot for public realm funding, which works towards improving the local environment, such as hanging baskets and new street trees.

As a council we recognise how important it is that people have a say in decisions that directly affect their community and so I would encourage you to attend your next local meeting.
